Maharashtra is continuously registering an increasing number of the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19 cases. In the past 24 hours, the State registered the highest of 2021, 40,000 plus cases. With this, the tally of COVID-19 positive cases crossed 27 lakhs. The State has notched a stupendous 40,414 new cases for the day, taking the state tally to 27,13,875. In addition, 108 fresh deaths were reported in 24 hours, taking the cumulative total to 54,181.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s recovery rate of COVID-19 fell to 85.95 % from the previous 86.58 % and the fatality rate is at 2%. The number of active cases jumped up from 303,475 to 325,901 now.

Concerned with the current situation and rising cases, the Uddhav Thackeray led Shiv Sena Government hinted for a complete lockdown. Uddhav Thackeray, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, on the 28th of March, asked officials to plan strategies and chalk out guidelines for the smooth lockdown in the State.

Some of the areas of Maharashtra, like Thane, Pune and others are already witnessing a partial lockdown. In addition, Mumbai started to have night curfews amid COVID-19.

Mr. Uddhav Thackeray said, “Plan for lockdown… If there is no adherence to restrictions by the people, we may have to go in for it (lockdown) if people fail to follow the new normal,” The statement was made during a meeting on the evening of the 28th of March. The State COVID-19 Task Force and other concerned officials attended the meeting.

In addition, the Maharashtra CM directed the departments concerned to conduct assessment of the ground situation amid the second wave of COVID-19.

An official announcement regarding complete lockdown in Maharashtra is awaited.
