On the evening of the 18th of July, the Indian National Congress (INC) appointed Navjot Singh Sidhu as the President of the Punjab Congress Committee (PCC.)

The INC took to Twitter and posted, “Hon’ble Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi has appointed Shri Navjot Singh Sidhu as the President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect. The party appreciates the contributions of outgoing PCC President, Shri Sunil Jakhar.”

The appointment of the new PCC Chief disappointed the Chief Minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh Gill.

Besides appointing Navjot Singh Sidhu as PCC Chief, the Indian National Congress appointed four working presidents for Punjab.  The four working presidents are: Sukhwinder Singh Danny, Sangat Singh Gilzian, Pawan Goel and Kuljit Singh Nagra.

The appointment of Navjot Singh Sidhu came amid the ongoing issues in the PCC and objections of Amarinder Singh Gill.  Mr. Gill also objected to the appointment of four working presidents and suggested other names himself.

However, the INC ignored his objections and suggestions and announced the new PCC Chief along with four working presidents.  Ashwani Kumar, a senior leader of the INC, urged all the MLAs and members of PCC to support the decision and be united.  He said, “This is a time to be united.  There are no victors or losers.  Reconciliation is the way forward.  All Congress persons will, hopefully, have a role to play in fighting an ideological battle.

Initially, the new PCC president announcement was scheduled for the 19th of July, after a meeting called by Sunil Jakhar, the incumbent PCC President.  Mr. Jakhar called all the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and PCC members, but after the surprise announcement by Ms. Sonia Gandhi, the interim President of the INC, Sunil Jakhar cancelled the Monday meeting.  He also congratulated Navjot Singh Sidhu and said, “I am confident that he (Navjot Singh Sidhu) will come true to the expectations of the party as well as the people of Punjab and take everybody along.”

It is to be noted, the appointment of Navjot Singh Sidhu came at a time when Punjab is scheduled to go for Assembly elections in 2022.
