On the 17th of February, Thursday, Mr. Arindam Bagchi, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) clarification of India’s stand over the ongoing Ukraine-Russia border issue.
On Thursday, Mr. Arindam Bagchi addressed a media briefing and said, “India does not have any immediate plan to evacuate its citizens from Ukraine and its focus has been on ensuring their safety rather than on anything “larger.”
He further said, India has been supportive of an immediate de escalation of tensions and resolution of the Ukraine crisis through sustained diplomatic dialogue. The Indian Government is also in touch with the Indian Embassy in Ukraine. The MEA are monitoring the current situation and working to ensure Indian nationals, students and others are safe.
Addressing the question on evacuation, the MEA Spokesperson said, “Our focus is and remains on Indian citizens, Indian students, Indian nationals rather than anything larger than that and in terms of what we need to do to ensure that they are safe.”
Recently on the 15th of February, the MEA advised Indians to avoid any travel to Ukraine and to return if possible, considering the Russia-Ukraine border issue. Notably, Russian troops have been escalating at the Ukraine border for a month and despite warnings of war from the United States of America (U.S.A.,) the situation is getting worse with the possibility of war like situation in Ukraine.
The major reason behind the situation is North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) which has members like Russia, the U.S.A., the United Kingdom (U.K.,) Russia and 26 other countries. However, Ukraine wants to be a member of the NATO, which has been supported by the U.S.A., the U.K., France and others, but Russia.
The Russian Government does not want Ukraine to be a part of NATO, as it will expand the grouping at the Ukraine-Russia border. Another major reason is, Crimea, as Russian believes if Ukraine becomes NATO member, if would try to take back Crimea by military force.
