The couple first met in London where Noushad went to pursue his MBA and Mariam was a sales officer. After dating for some time, they got married in April 2013 in Scotland after which Noushad departed to India with a promise of returning soon and convincing his parents for their marriage. Mariam said that he used to keep in touch regularly in the begining, but later on started avoiding her. Gradually he sent a text quoting that his parents have not agreed to their relationship and that he wouldn’t be returning to the UK. It was then that Mariam decided to pursue her husband who deserted her.

Mariam reached his hometown in 2015 and with help of a women’s group, which traced him in Thrissur district and filed a case against him in the local court. The court ordered her to stay at his home and also to be placed under protection. She approached the court with the case of domestic violence and also was accused of being ISI agent because of her Pakistani origin.

The family then agreed to come to a settlement in October 2015, by the time Noushad married another local girl who was willing to pay alimony. Mariam went back to London, obtained a divorce and returned to Kerala on January 19 to finalize the case. After two years of a legal battle, Mariam finally obtained a divorce from her deserter husband in January 2017.
