On the 29th of August, Monday, Mr. Narendra Modi took to Twitter and saidm “Greetings on National Sports Day and tributes to Major Dhyan Chand Ji on his birth anniversary. The recent years have been great for sports. May this trend continue. May sports keep gaining popularity across India (sic.)”
Notably, National Sports Day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, a legend of Hockey. In the sports field of India, Major Dhyan Chand was one of the players who were honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 1956.
The late hockey player Major Dhyan Chand was born on the 29th of August, 1905. With his extraordinary goal scoring feats, the sportsperson Late Major Dhyan Chand earned his name and fame in the field of Indian hockey. He earned three Olympic gold medals, in 1928, 1932 and 1936.
For his contribution to Indian hockey, Dhyan Chand was also known as The Wizard or The Magician of hockey.
