The Punjab Government, on the 6th of January, formed a high level committee to investigate the “security breach” on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit.

According to sources, after major security lapses in Prime Minister’s arrival, the Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Charanjit Channi formed the committee. The constituted a high-level committee composed of Retired Justice Mehtab Singh Gill and Principal Secretary of Home Affairs and Justice Anurag Verma would investigate the matter. The committee would thoroughly investigate the lapses and submit a detailed report within three days.

A spokesperson of the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) issued a statement regarding the same. The spokesperson said, “The Committee shall submit its report within three days.”

It is to be noted, in view of the major ‘security lapse’, Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, cancelled his Ferozepur visit. According to sources, Mr. Narendra Modi was scheduled to visit Ferozepur, Punjab, on the 5th of January, Wednesday. He landed at Bhatinda helipad on a special helicopter and was scheduled to reach Ferozepur’s Hussainiwala. However, due to cloudy weather, he decided to reach there via road. On the way he was stuck for 15 to 20 minutes at a flyover, which was 30 km from Hussainiwala memorial. Reportedly, a group from the Bharatiya Kisan Union blocked the road, preventing PM Modi’s car from moving further.

Considering the situation, the Ministry of Home Affairs of India, issued a statement regarding the cancellation of the visit. In the statement, the Union MHA said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed event at Ferozepur in Punjab on Wednesday had to be cancelled owing to a “security lapse.”

In addition, the Union Ministry also sought a detailed report from the Punjab Government and to fix responsibility for the lapse and take strict action.
