On Friday, Congress President Rahul Gandhi said his party is all in favor of the State of Andhra Pradesh’s demand for special status. He, in turn, urged the political parties to unite to support the cause. Gandhi also showed his support for the completion of the Polavaram Project.
Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “The Congress Party supports the just demands of the people of Andhra Pradesh for special category status and speedy completion of the Polavaram project. It’s time for all parties to unite on this issue and support this call for justice.”
The Houses of Parliament were adjourned multiple times during the first phase of the Budget Session due to protests by the Andhra MPs. The MPs of the ruling TDP, the YSR Congress and the Congress are protesting against the Center for failing to fulfil the commitments made during the 2014 bifurcation.
The Polavaram Irrigation Project is expected to benefit the upland areas of East Godavari, West Godavari, Visakhapatnam and Krishna districts. The Project is only 53 percent completed. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley assured the protesting MPs a plan would be released to facilitate funds under a special package for the State.
