In January 2013, Rahul Gandhi was appointed as Vice President of Congress in Jaipur. Now, after nearly five years he will be taking up the position of President of the Congress Party. A senior party reported that Rahul Gandhi will be appointed to the highest position in the party in November.

The news comes a year after Rahul Gandhi spoke to the Congress Working Committee (CWC) that makes the decisions for the party. He told the CWC that he was willing and ready to become president of Congress.

The new change will bring an end to Sonia Gandhi’s 19 year long presidency. Sonia Gandhi has had the longest term in Congress’ 132 year old history.

Sonia Gandhi is the fourth female president of Congress after Annie Besant, Sarojini Naidu and Indira Gandhi. Sources have also revealed Sonia Gandhi will not retire from politics once her son takes over, but will remain the Chairperson of the Parliament Board and a member of the CWC.

Elections will be conducted to fill 10 of the 21 CWC seats. Among which 10 will be nominated and the 21st chair will be for the president.
