Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, has been in India for the past 6 days. Today, Prime Minister Modi welcomed Trudeau and his family at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. The two leaders held bilateral talks after a ceremonial welcome.
PM Modi and Mr. Trudeau held a joint conference where PM Modi said, “We discussed many issues including defence operation. Terrorism and extremism are a threat to countries like ours and to fight these elements it is important for us to come together.”
During the bilateral meeting, the two leaders discussed trade, climate change, education, defense and civil nuclear cooperation. As India has a growing concern over Sikh radicalism in Canada, the key area of focus was cooperation on counter terror measures.
Trudeau was quoted saying, “We discussed strengthening people to people ties. Canada has 1.3 million people of Indian descent. We seek to uphold democratic traditions, pluralism and diversities.”
This was the first time PM Modi broke protocol and did not receive PM Trudeau from the airport on the first day of his arrival. Prime Minister Modi did not travel to his home State Gujarat to accompany PM Trudeau. However, PM Modi extended this courtesy to Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu, Japanese PM Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping
