SC Appointed Interlocutors Visit Shaheen Bagh

On the 19th of February, interlocutors appointed by the Supreme Court visited Shaheen Bagh in Delhi.

The visit was planned to speak to the protestors who are sitting on a 24X7 strike against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act [CAA,] 2019.

The SC appointed a few members for the mediation process, saying the protest should be carried out on alternate days as the place is blocked and is proving to be inconvenient to travellers and daily commuters.

Interlocutors Sanjay Hegde and Sadhana Ramachandran visited Shaheen Bagh and said, “We have come here according to the order of the Supreme Court. We hope to speak to everyone. We hope to resolve the matter with everybody’s cooperation.” 

Sadhana Ramachandran said, “The Supreme Court has said that you have the right to protest. The law (CAA) has been challenged in the Supreme Court. But like us, others too have their rights, like the right to use roads, open their shops.” 

The suggestion to carry out the mediation process came after the Apex Court heard a petition filed by advocate Amit Sahni, who moved the SC in order to get the Court to take action for smooth traffic flow on the Kalindi Kunj-Shaheen Bagh stretch.  The stretch was blocked due to a 2 month protest at Shaheen Bagh against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) implementing the CAA.
