The Supreme Court on Tuesday, the 19th of July, granted protection from arrest to suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.

Notably, Ms. Nupur Sharma moved to the Supreme Court (SC) demanding protection from arrest, in the first information reports (FIRs) registered against her.

She had moved the apex court seeking protection from arrest as well as the revival of her plea for clubbing of FIRs lodged over her remarks on the Prophet.

The top court also issued notices to states like Delhi, West Bengal, and Maharashtra to respond to Nupur Sharma’s plea to transfer/quash the FIRs against her and, as an interim measure, granted her protection from arrest. The court will take up the matter for a further hearing on August 10.

“The concern of this court is how to ensure that the petitioner can avail of the alternative remedy as permitted by this court. To explore such modalities, let notices be issued to all respondents,” the court said while granting relief to Nupur Sharma.

Senior advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for Nupur Sharma, informed the court about the social media posts threatening Sharma with murder and rape. In addition, Singh also pointed out that “at least 3-4 more FIRs have been filed in West Bengal”.

Nupur Sharma had made Delhi, Maharashtra, Telangana, West Bengal, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Assam parties in her petition where FIRs have been lodged against her.

The Supreme Court reviewed the petition and adjourned the hearing to the 10th of August.
