On the 12th of January, Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 11 medical colleges in Tamil Nadu.

The inauguration event was held virtually through video conferencing from Delhi, amid the ongoing Wuhan virus pandemic.

According to sources, the 11 colleges were launched in districts of Tamil Nadu; Virudhunagar, Namakkal, Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Thiruvallur, Nagapattinam, Dindigul, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Ramanathapuram and Krishnagiri. The new colleges are being inaugurated at an estimated cost of Rs. 4,000 crores, of which the Central Government is providing Rs. 2,145 crores. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said the new colleges would enhance medical education and health infrastructure in Tamil Nadu. Reportedly, the new medical colleges are being established under the Centrally Sponsored scheme of ‘Establishing of New Medical Colleges attached with existing district/referral hospital’.

With the launch of these medical colleges, the MBBS seats in the State would increase to 92,222, by 79.60% more than the previous 51,348 seats in a year. In addition, Postgraduate (PG) seats would increase by 80.70% from 31,185 to 56,374 in a year.

Besides medical colleges, Mr. Narendra Modi also launched a new campus of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil in the State. The CICT was established at a cost of Rs. 24 crores, fully funded by the Central Government, to enhance regional Tamil Language and its importance amongst youths.
