The new owner of Air India is going to take over the airlines, after 69 years, today, the 27th of January.

The new owner Tata Groups would take over the airlines company from the Government of India (GoI,) on Thursday.

The Tata Group Chairman Mr. N. Chandrasekhar is in Delhi to witness the formal transfer.  In addition, a senior government official, who wished to be anonymous said, “Officially Air India hands over to Tata Group today in the afternoon.  Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran will be in the ministries for the official handover process.”

Ahead of the official transfer of power, Mr. N. Chandrasekhar is going to meet Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, today afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Tata Group announced ‘Enhanced Meal Service’ after the takeover of Air India. The “enhanced meal service” would be served on Mumbai-Newark flight and five Mumbai-Delhi flights, which would operate after the official take over.

As a part of the deal, the Tata group will also be handed over Air India Express and a 50 percent stake in ground handling arm Air India.

Notably, Tata Sons Private Limited, on the 8th of October, took over Air India Airlines.  The step is said to be a major victory for Tata Sons and the Central Government of India (GoI,) which is aiming to privatise the Indian Government run airliner.  The landmark acquisition recommendation of Air India is said to be a historic event for the company.  After almost 68 years, Tata Sons reacquired Air India, once upon a time launched as Tata Air Services.  Founded in 1930, Air India was originally owned by Tata Sons as Tata Air Services.  Later, in 1953, six years after Independence, the then ruling Government purchased the majority stakes of Tata Air Services and relaunched it as Air India Airlines.  The Government of India panel officially announced Tata Sons to be the highest bidder of Air India with Rs. 18,000 crores.
