In West Bengal’s Kolkata, a huge number of people from across the state, gathered at Esplanade to participate in the Martyr’s Day rally, organized for the 21st of July, Thursday.

According to sources, to commemorate the death of 13 people, during a firing at the Congress Youth Rally in 1993, the Trinamool Congress called for the rally.

After the 1993 incident, the TMC observes Martyrs’ Day on the 21st of July to commemorate the killing of 13 people in police firing on a Youth Congress rally against the then Left Front government in 1993.  It is to be noted, that Ms. Mamata Banerjee was the Youth Congress State President.  Even after forming the Trinamool Congress in 1998 and coming to power in West Bengal in 2011, the Mamata Banerjee-led party continued to observe the 21st of July, as Martyr’s Day.

Notably, the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC organizes a rally and remembers the deceased, on the 21st of July, every year.  Notably, the annual rally is being held after a gap of two years due to the pandemic and enthusiastic party supporters started arriving at the venue as early as 4:00 A.M., in trains, buses, and private vehicles.  Many of them have arrived in the city two days ago for the rally, which will be addressed by the feisty TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee.

Furthermore,  the State Government has arranged tight security to avoid any untoward incident at the rally.  At least 4,500 police personnel have been deployed across the city to maintain law and order in the city during the day.

Notably, the 2022 rally is said to be unique as it is the first after the party’s decisive victory in the state election in 2021 and TMC’s return to power for the third consecutive term.
