The Union Cabinet, on the 24th of December, approved Rs. 8,500 crores to update the National Population Register (NPR.)

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi led Union Cabinet conducted a meeting to discuss the proposal regarding the updation of the NPR.  Chaired by Narendra Modi, the Cabinet approved the proposal and granted an amount of Rs. 8,500 crores for the same. The meeting was held in New Delhi.

Under the NPR, a census will be conducted from house to house across the Country.  The exercise to collect identity data of every resident of India. The exercise is expected to begin from the 1st of April, 2020 and continue till the 30th of September, 2020.

After the Central Government introduced the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, the NPR could be the first step towards the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC.)

The NPR data was last updated in 2015 via a door to door survey.

The NPR list would be updated in every Indian state, except Assam.
