The Delhi Court announced its verdict regarding the 2017 Unnao rape case on the 16th of December.

In 2017, Kuldeep Singh Sengar, an expelled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member, allegedly raped a girl when she was 15 years old, at his residence in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh.

The girl survived the incident and filed a complaint against the lawmaker, following which, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probed the case and found Kuldeep guilty.  In 2018, Kuldeep was sentenced to imprisonment and is serving a jail term for the same. The case was running in the Lucknow Court, but later, the SC ordered the case be transferred to a Delhi Court.  In 2018, after the investigation, the CBI found Sengar guilty and revealed the accusations made by the teen were true.

On the 16th of December, the Delhi Court announced Kuldeep Singh Sengar was guilty of the crime.  He was convicted for rape under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for the offence of public servant committing penetrative sexual assault on a child.

Though the Delhi High Court announced Kuldeep Singh Sengar was guilty, the judge acquitted Shashi Singh, who is said to be Kuldeep Singh’s accomplice in the crime.

Judge Dharmesh Sharma announced the verdict.

The Delhi Court further added the quantum of punishment to Sengar would be given on the 19th of December.

Previously, the Unnao rape and kidnapping case was registered with a court in Lucknow.

However, after the victim met with an accident and alleged Mr. Sengar was behind the accident, the SC ordered all the five registered cases against Sengar be transferred to the Delhi High Court.

As of now, the victim, along with her family, is in Delhi in a rented apartment under the assistance of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW.)  The Apex Court also ordered Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) security be provided to them.

The next hearing, wherein the Delhi Court would announce the punishment, is scheduled on the 19th of December.

Stay tuned for further updates.
