IMD Issues Two Day Thunderstorm Warning In Hyderabad

After the two hour long thunderstorm in Hyderabad yesterday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a two day warning in the city. The unlikely weather in the city caused inconvenience to a number of motorists who were forced to ride in knee deep water.

Many trees were uprooted and power cuts disrupted daily lives in different parts of the city. IMD recorded a maximum rainfall of 52.5 mm throughout the city.

Areas like Trimulgherry, Yapral, Suchitra and Bowenpally faced a heavy storm accompanied by a hailstorm. IMD scientists were unable to verify the hailstorm as they lack the equipment to detect hail. The weather scientists stated the reason for the unseasonal rainfall was Cumulonimbus clouds.

Cumulonimbus clouds are dense clouds that form from water vapor that is carried by powerful upward air currents. The GHMC sent out emergency relief teams to remove the uprooted trees and clear water logging to ease the traffic.

The temperature in Hyderabad fluctuated between 36 and 38 degrees Celsius during the day. Later in the night as the thunderstorm raged the city the temperature plummeted to 20 degrees Celsius.
