Ball Tampering Scandal: Steve Smith Breaks Down During Media Address

The cricket ball tampering scandal continues with former Australian Captain Steve Smith breaking down while addressing the media. Steve Smith has been barred from playing the sport for the next year along with David Warner.

Addressing the media in Sydney Smith said, “I take full responsibility. There was a failure of leadership, of my leadership. I’ll do everything I can to make up for my mistake and the damage it’s caused.”

The cricketer further added, “If any good can come of this, if there can be a lesson to others then I hope I can be a force for change. I know I’ll regret this for the rest of my life. I’m absolutely gutted. I hope in time I can earn back respect and forgiveness.”

With tears in his eyes, Smith stated, “Cricket is the greatest sport in the world. It’s been my life and I hope it can be again. I’m sorry and I’m absolutely devastated.”

The distraught player said, “I don’t blame anyone. I’m the Captain of the Australian team. It’s on my watch and I take responsibility for what happened last Saturday.”

Smith broke down in front of the media and with a heavy heart said, “I’m deeply sorry. I love the game of cricket. I love entertaining young kids … I just want to say sorry for the pain I’ve brought to Australia, to the fans and the public.”

Steve Smith was humiliated on his way back to Australia as cricket fans booed him at the Johannesburg airport in South Africa. The fans loudly chanted “cheat” as Smith was escorted through the airport with heavy security.

David Warner and Steve Smith have both been barred from participating in the IPL. Steve Smith had said he stepped down as the captain for Rajasthan Royals. Smith will be replaced by Ajinkya Rahane as captain for the team.

During a match between South Africa and Australia Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were involved in tampering the game ball. This cost Smith 100% of the match fee with a one Test Match ban. Cameron, on the other hand, lost 75% of the match fee and got three demerit points.
