A 13 year old Girl Rescued on Labour Day: Activists and the police rescued a girl from a retired government officers house in Ranga Reddy District yesterday, as the Labour Department was busy enjoying ‘their day.’ Members from Balala Hakkula Sangham along with Childline Officials and District Child Protect Officer raided the house to rescue the girl.

Anuradha Rao, president of Balala Hakkula Sangham told Deccan Chronicle, “Though we informed the Labour Department a day in advance and requested them to come for the rescue operation, they said they were busy with the May Day celebrations. This attitude should be condemned.”

The 13 year old girl was forced to work for the past six months in Bheem Reddy’s house in Vanastalipuram. Her parents had sent her away to make 20,000 rupees a year. The young girl was made to quit her schooling after class 5 and work without rest. The girl informed the officials after being rescued that Reddy’s wife had beaten her when she asked for leave to go home.

The girl spoke to NDTV and said, “I wash clothes and vessels, sweep and mop. Work goes on till 10 in the night” but the girl was more keen on studying to become a doctor in the future.

A case has been registered by the Vanasthalipuram Police and Bheem Reddy has been arrested. The girl was never physically abused but was subjected to a lot of domestic violence. The girl was taken away and is now at the Kachiguda Girls Home.
