On the 8th of May, 250 migrant workers from Bihar returned to Telangana through the Shramik Express trains, specially launched for the transportation of migrant workers.

The special train reached Lingampally station with workers who were working in the rice mills of Telangana

According to East Central Railway (ECR,) the train departed from Khagaria in Bihar at 3.45 A.M., on the 7th of May and reached Telangana today, the 8th of May.

The same train, which departed from Bihar, carried 1,200 migrant workers to Bihar on the 5th of May.

K. Chandrashekar Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana, said, “These workers, who load and unload the rice trucks, had gone to Bihar for Holi and are stranded there due to the lockdown.”  Nearly 90 % of workers in rice mills are native of Bihar.

Telangana is procuring 1.05 crore tonnes of paddy from farmers at designated procurement centres in villages in wake of the nationwide lockdown.  However, the procurement would not be possible without these migrants who went to their home on Holi and got stuck due to the lockdown.

The nationwide lockdown was implemented on the 24th of March and was revised twice once, on the 14th of April to the 3rd of May and second on the 1st of May to the 17th of May.

The nationwide lockdown is proposed to end on the 17th of May, but in Telangana the lockdown has been extended to the 29th of May.

Meanwhile, Telangana reported a total of 1,122 positive cases of the Novel Coronavirus with 29 fatalities till the 8th of May.
