On the 16th of November, Chitamaneni Prabhakar, a former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP,) was released on bail.
Chintamaneni Prabhakar was imprisoned at the Eluru Jail. Sixty seven criminal cases were registered against him in the last 22 years.
The West Godavari Police arrested Chintamaneni Prabhakar in September 2019 for abusing and assaulting Cheruku Joseph, a Dalit man. A case was filed under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. Despite the TDP’s protest against Chintamaneni’s arrest warrant, the Andhra Pradesh (AP) Government went ahead with the arrest.
However, on the 15th of November, Navdeep Singh Grewal, the Superintendent of Police (SP,) confirmed the bail of the TDP leader.
Though Chintamaneni Prabhakar was released on bail, all the 9 cases filed against him in October 2019 are still being investigated.
