In a tragic incident, a Class IX student ended his life since his parents couldn’t afford to buy him a smart phone required to participate in online classes at Kolwai in Bheerpur mandal on Tuesday.
According to police, Akula Sairam (16) hanged himself from the ceiling when other family members were out working in the fields. He was found dead by his neighbours.
A student of local government school, Sairam had been asking his parents to buy him a smartphone so that he could participate in the online classes that began on September 1.
His parents, Rajesham and Shankaravva, couldn’t afford a smart phone given their poor financial background. Mallesham, a toddy-tapper, also took up agriculture work to complement his income while Shankaravva rolled beedis.
Sairam had been asking for a smartphone for the past four days, but the parents couldn’t affor it, leading to the death by suicide.
On getting information about the incident, Sub-Inspector Manohar Rao rushed to the spot and shifted the body for postmortem. Based on the father’s complaint, police registered a case and began investigation.
