The farmers in the Khammam district of Telangana are incurring huge losses due to the ongoing paddy procurement issue between the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government and the Central Government.

In this political blame game, the real sufferers are the farmers in the State who would go by the advisory of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government.  A farmer from Kalluru Mandal said, “We are incurring huge losses due to hazy policies of the government on paddy cultivation.  It earlier announced no paddy cultivation in Yasangi season, but it overturned its decision and claimed to procure entire paddy produce in Yasangi.  Those (nearly 50% of farmers) who have not sown paddy are suffering great losses.  We feel totally cheated due to flip-flop by the government.”

In  Khammam, approximately 2,26,532 acres of land area are covered under paddy in the yasangi season.   As per sources,  this season paddy is grown in 1,05,507 lakh acres in the district.  However, farmers of several regions including Khammam went as per the TRS Government advisory and did not grow paddy are now suffering the loss.  Notably, The Telangana Chief Minister cautioned the farmers that the State would not procure paddy cultivated in the rabi, a majority of the farmers opted for a ‘crop holiday’ as their lands were not suitable for crops other than paddy.

However, responding to the Central Government’s decision of not procuring paddy from the Telangana farmers, the K. Chandrashekar Rao Government announced to set up several paddy procurement centres to buy paddy at the Minimum Support Price (MSP.)   While the farmers who went as per the advisory and produced less paddy are at loss, whereas those who went against were being benefited by the Government largesse.

In regard to this betrayal of the TRS Government, the disappointed farmers demanded the compensation of Rs. 25,000 per acre for losses that they incurred by not sowing paddy during the rabi season.
