On the 3rd of January, Tuesday, the employees of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) went on strike.

According to sources, the HMRL employees called for a strike, boycotting their duties and demanding a hike in salaries.

Red Line ticketing employees from Miyapur to LB Nagar staged a boycott, expressing concern over a pending hike in salaries for 5 years.  Addressing the media, the protesting employees said they have not received a hike in salary in the past 5 years.  It is to be noted, since 2017, the HMRL is giving all employees a salary of Rs. 11,000.  However, after five years, now the employees are demanding a hike in salary from Rs. 15,000 to Rs, 18,000.

The situation has created a ruckus in all the major metro stations in Hyderabad.  Due to the strike, passengers have queued up for tickets at Ameerpet and Miyapur metro stations, where employees are working as usual.

Meanwhile, the HMRL Management condemned the strike and called in unethical hindering the public interest.  Furthermore, the management issued a statement which read, “Few ticketing staff under a contracting agency have connived and abstained from work today to disrupt train operations, causing passenger inconvenience.  They are also spreading rumours and misinformation out of vested interest.  Their claims are false and their actions are highly against the public interest, which will call for stern action by the HMR management.  The management ensures due facilities and benefits are given to staff; However, they will discuss with them to learn more.  Train operations are running on time and sufficient manpower is available.”
