On the 23rd of December, Justice G. Chandraiah was appointed as the first Chairman of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC.)

The Telangana Government recently, on the 5th of December, issued a Government Order (GO) directing the officials to constitute a panel for a separate SHRC in Telangana.

Previously, the SHRC of Andhra Pradesh (A.P.,) was catering to the human rights cases of both the Telugu states, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.  The human rights cases were taken up by Sissar Ahmed Kakru, the former Chairman of the joint SHRC of Telangana and A.P.

Mr. Kakru retired in October 2017 and since then, the post of Chairman was empty.  Despite getting an independent SHRC in 2017, the State Government did not appoint the SHRC Chairman and its members.

However, on the 23rd of December, with the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government passing the GO, Justice Chandraiah took over as the Chairman of the SHRC.

Headed by G. Chandraiah, the Commission would have two members, N. Ananda Rao and Mohammed Irfan Moinuddin.

The newly appointed Chairman and members of the Telangana SHRC would have a tenure of 3 years, scheduled to end in 2022.
