Telangana reported the lowest unemployment rate compared to other Indian states and union territories (UTs.)
On the 2nd of February, Wednesday, the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) released data regarding the unemployment rate in India. While the overall unemployment rate in India fell to 6.57% lowest since March 2021, Telangana was on the top with the lowest rate of 0.7%, till January 2022.
While the unemployment in urban India stood at 8.16%, rural areas recorded the lowest figures at 5.84%.
After Telangana, the lowest unemployment rate was reported from Gujarat (1.2%, followed by Meghalaya 1.5% and Odisha 1.8%.
Meanwhile, Haryana recorded the highest unemployment rate at 23.4%, followed by Rajasthan at 18.9%.
As per the CMIE data, the number of unemployed people in India was estimated at 53 million, in December 2021, with a large proportion of women. Notably, of the total 35 million people looking for a job in 2021 December, over 23% (8 mimills) were women.
Mr. Mahesh Vyas, the Managing Director and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CMIE, an Independent think tank, the center said, “An equally important challenge is to provide employment to the additional 17 million who were also not employed and were willing to work if work was available, although they were not actively looking for employment.”
Meanwhile, neighboring Telugu State Andhra Pradesh reported an unemployment rate of 6.4% in December 2021.
