The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Ministers, Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs,) and leaders held ‘rasta roko’ protest on the National highways against the Central Government.  The protest on the 6th of April was called out over the paddy procurement issue between the TRS Government and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led Central Government.

The rasta roko was held as per the call by the TRS working president and Information Technology Minister Mr. K.T. Rama Rao.  This rasta roko is one of the agitations in the series of protests to mount pressure on the Centre to purchase paddy from the farmers in the State. The rasta roko was held in Patancheru, Natirekal, Mahabubnagar, Sangareddy and other places linking the national highways.   The TRS Minister Mr. V. Srinivas Goud lead the rasta roko in Mahabubnagar.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leaders and workers called for a protest on the 4th of April, Monday.  The leaders staged demonstrations and held dharnas along with farmers at all the mandal headquarters, protesting against the Central Government over the paddy procurement issue.

It is to be noted, that recently, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led Central Government refused to purchase 100% paddy from the Telugu State, forcing the ruling TRS Government to use state funds to procure the crops.  Reacting to this, Mr. K.T. Rama Rao, the Working President of the TRS called for a statewide protest.  Ministers, TRS Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs,) the Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) and the party’s other elected representatives from village level to district level took part in agitation programmes demanding that the Centre procure paddy from Telangana during the rabi season.  The TRS called for a five phase agitation programme, which started on the 4th of April and would continue till the 11th of April.

The TRS leaders and cadre would hold ‘rasta rokos’ on all major national and state highways as part of the second phase of agitation on the 6th of April.

Addressing the dharnas, the ministers and TRS MLAs said though the BJP Government at the Centre made it clear that it would not procure paddy from Telangana in rabi, the BJP leaders in Telangana provoked farmers to sow paddy for the rabi season, promising that they would ensure that Centre procured paddy from Telangana.

As per sources, Telangana farmers had sown paddy on 35 lakh acres which reached the harvest stage in the rabi season.
