On the 13th of December, Tuesday, the Karnataka Medical Department confirmed a five year old girl to be the first Zika virus case.  The five year old girl has tested positive for the infection and been advised to take precautionary measures.  The girl is a resident of Raichur village in Karnataka and is the first confirmed Zika Virus case.

Mr. K. Sudhakar, the Health Minister of Karnataka, confirmed the same and said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led Government was monitoring the situation very carefully.  He further said, “Our department is well prepared to handle it.  We have got a lab report from Pune..,”  He further said, “Three specimens were sent, out of which two were negative and the girl’s returned positive.”

Zika virus disease is transmitted by infected Aedes mosquitoes, which are also known to spread dengue and chikungunya.  The virus was first reported in Uganda in 1947.

Meanwhile, with Karnataka reporting its first case, the virus has now been spread in Indian states like Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
