Amaravati: The degree curriculum in Andhra Pradesh is set for a major transformation. From the next academic year, students will have the option to pursue two major subjects, replacing the single-major system introduced in 2023-24. The previous government had removed the earlier three-subject multidisciplinary approach, which led to availability issues in government degree colleges. Due to the single-major model, many institutions struggled to offer diverse subjects, creating faculty shortages and limiting options for students.
Private colleges adapted by introducing popular courses like B.Sc Computer and B.Com Computer, tailoring offerings to student demand. However, criticism against the single-major system persisted, prompting the shift to a more flexible model.
Under the new system, students will have two major subjects along with minors. As per UGC guidelines, a three-year degree will require 120 credits, while a four-year degree will need 160 credits. The curriculum is expected to include minors in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and data analytics to align with industry trends.
To oversee these changes, the Higher Education Council has formed a 12-member committee led by V. Venkaiah, retired Vice-Chancellor of Krishna University. The committee is expected to submit its report within three weeks.
