Former Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender has approached the Supreme Court against the Telangana High Court order that disqualified him from the Telangana Legislative Assembly under the anti-defection law. The Supreme Court is set to hear the matter on September 23.
Nagender was elected from Khairatabad on a BRS ticket in the Telangana Assembly. He later joined the Congress and contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Secunderabad on a Congress ticket.
The Telangana High Court on September 18 set aside the Assembly Speaker’s earlier decision and disqualified Nagender under the anti-defection law. The court also declared the Khairatabad Assembly seat vacant and directed that a fresh election be held.
Nagender has now challenged the High Court order in the Supreme Court. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi mentioned the matter before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Monday. The Chief Justice said the case would be listed for hearing on Wednesday, September 23.
The Supreme Court’s hearing could decide the next legal step in the dispute over Nagender’s disqualification and the Khairatabad Assembly seat.
