Andhra Local Polls Take a New Turn in Supreme Court

The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has approached the Supreme Court with fresh requests over the ongoing local body election process in Andhra Pradesh.

In its latest application, the party has sought a committee led by a retired judge to review the election process. It has also asked the court to stop candidates from being declared elected unopposed until further orders.

The party claims that 455 urban local body candidates and 1,680 candidates in ZPTC and MPTC elections were prevented from filing their nominations. These claims have been made by YSRCP and have not been established as court findings.

The party has also sought more time for filing nominations in affected areas and the release of CCTV footage from centres where complaints were reported.

The latest move comes ahead of a Supreme Court hearing on the local body polls. The court has been examining concerns over the nomination process and has directed the State Election Commission to address complaints.

The case could influence how the election process moves forward, as the court considers the concerns raised by the opposition party.
