In Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district, three people were killed and many were left severely injured in a stampede at the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) meeting.

On the 1st of January, Sunday, Mr. Nara Chandrababu Naidu, the National President of the TDP, addressed a public meeting for the distribution of Sankranti Kanuka kit, freebies for the poor in Guntur.  During the meeting, due to the heavy rush of people, a stampede like situation occurred, killing three people and leaving as many as 18 people injured.  It is to be noted, the incident occurred after Mr. Nara Chandrababu Naidu left the venue after his speech around 6:30 P.M., directing the TDP workers to distribute the ration kits and clothes under the Sankranti Kanuka.  Soon after the TDP President left, people started falling on each other to get the kits and rushed, resulting in a stampede and unfortunate death.

The deceased are said to be women, identified as Goppisetti Ramadevi (52,) K. Rajya Lakshmi (48) and Asia Begum (54.)

Taking a dig at the TDP and condemning the deaths due to stampede at the TDP meeting, Ms. Vidadala Rajini, the Health Minister of Andhra Pradesh, said, “To show that a large number of people are attending their public meetings, Naidu and TDP leaders are holding public meetings in narrow lanes and streets… leading to stampede… Chandrababu Naidu is responsible for the fatalities.”

However, Mr. Nara Lokesh, the Working President of the TDP and Mr. Nara Chandrababu Naidu blamed the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) led State Government for not providing security.  They said Mr. Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, and his government failed to provide adequate security for the public meeting, despite asking for it.

It is to be noted, this is not the first time that people died due to a stampede at the TDP meetings.  Recently, on the 28th of December, a similar situation occurred during a meeting in Kandukur, Nellore district, where eight people died and many were injured.
