In the Anganwadi worker murder, the Andhra Pradesh Police intensified their investigation and directed the Prakasam District Police to form a special team.

On the 7th of June, Wednesday, Mr. Rajendranath Reddy, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Andhra Pradesh, asked the police to immediately arrest the accused in the killing of Savalam Hanumayamma, an  Anganwadi worker in Prakasam.

Notably, on the 5th of June, Mr. Kondal Rao, a local leader of the ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) allegedly mowed down Savalam Hanumayamma (50) near her house.  Terming it as a ‘ghastly incident’, DGP Rajendranath Reddy said, “District SP (Superintendent of Police) and Deputy SP have been instructed to immediately arrest the accused by forming a special team.  It’s a ghastly incident.  The accused will be taken to task.  He will be arrested and produced before the Magistrate soon.”

The victim’s husband, Sudhakar Rao, had alleged that two days before the murder, Kondal Rao had threatened Hanumayamma.  As per the victim’s husband, the accused had allegedly told the  Savalam Hanumayamma that her husband was working for Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and roaming with the TDP Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) while she was working as Anganwadi teacher under the YSRCP Government.  He also threatened to kill one of them, and would not rest until then.  Later, on the 6th of June, the accused allegedly mowed down the Angawadi worker.  Furthermore, at the time of the incident, the victim’s husband was participating in a protest along with TDP MLA Dola Sree Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy.

Confirming the statement of Sudhakar Rao, the Prakasam SP Malika Garg said, “As per the complainant Sudhakar, Kondal Rao had threatened Hanumayamma two days before the murder.  On Monday, he crushed her to death under a tractor.”

The police also confirmed to arrest Kondal Rao and questioned him, who later confessed his crime.  He said that Hanumayamma had been spreading rumors about his mother and also abused him frequently.  The resentment made Kondal Rao run his tractor over Hanumayamma, killing her instantly.

The matter soon became a YSRCP V/S TDP issue, when Mr. Nara Chandrababu Naidu, the National President of the TDP, wrote three separate letters to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC,) the National Commission for Women (NCW) and the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC,) urging them to inquire the alleged murder of Hanumayamma.

Furthermore, the TDP leader also requested the commissions to ensure that the victim’s family is provided with adequate security and financial support of Rs. 1 crore, along with a job.  Mr. Nara Chandrababu Naidu said, “The police did not act in time and allowed Kondal Rao to flee.  The victim’s husband was participating in a protest along with TDP MLA Dola Sree Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy when the incident took place.”

The TDP also demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged murder of the Anganwadi worker by a leader of the ruling YSRCP.
