Another rape incident has been reported in the Telugu State of Andhra Pradesh, on the 1st of May.

The opposition parties, public and Dalit groups protested against the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) Government, demanding strict action against the accused in the gang rape.  The Telugu Desam Party (TDP,) the JanaSena Party and other leaders expressed outrage over the rape of a Dalit woman at the Repalle railway station. 

What was the incident?

On the night of the 30th of April, a 25 year old woman was allegedly gang raped by two men after they attacked her husband at the Repalle railway station in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district.  Getting into the details, the woman came from Venkatdripuram village (Prakasam) with her husband and three children for masonry work.  The family of five decided to spend a night at the Repalle Station, when two unidentified men, allegedly committed the crime.  

The Guntur Superintendent of Police (SP) Mr. K.  Arif Hafeez said, “They wanted money and also snatched Rs 750 from the family. By the time we reached the Railway station, the three accused had fled from the scene after molesting her. We have taken the woman to a local government hospital for treatment.  She is in hospital undergoing treatment and is stable now.”

Meanwhile, the leaders of the opposition blamed the YSRCP Government for the failure of law and order in the State.  They have raised concerns over the Rapelle Station security where the incident took place and demanded justice for the victim’s family and immediate arrest of the accused.  

Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Minister Mr. Meruga Nagarjuna visited the victim at the Repalle Government Hospital.  He assured that the Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy Government would provide compensation of Rs. 2 lakh to the victim.  In addition, Mr. Rajiv, the son of Rajya Sabha member Mr. Mopidevi Venkataramana Rao, also provided financial assistance of Rs. 50,000 to the victim. 

Mr. Vidadala Rajini, the Medical and Health Minister of Andhra Pradesh and Collector Mr. Dinesh Kumar visited the victim at the hospital.  Ms. Vidadala Rajini said,  “As a mother and a woman I am deeply saddened by this incident; the guilty will be severely punished.” 

On the other hand, Ms. Vasireddy Padma, the Chairperson of the Andhra Pradesh Women’s Commission, would also visit the victim, on the 2nd of May, Monday.
