Amid protests and demand for the retention of the original name of the Konaseema district, there has been chaos in the district.  People gathered on the road, protesting against the Andhra Pradesh Government led by the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP,) in the Amalapuram region of the Konaseema district.

Notably, the Konaseema district was announced to be renamed after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, following which a mass protest broke out in the region of Konaseema and its headquarters in Amalapuram.  On the 18th of May, Mr. Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy announced to rename the newly announced Konaseema district as B.R. Ambedkar district.  Disappointed with the change of name, many organizations and committees called for a protest, demanding to retain the original name.

With the mass protest, the Andhra Pradesh Police deployed a huge force to control the situation and imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC.)  During the agitation,  Mr. K.S.S.V Subba Reddy, the Konaseema District Superintendent of Police (DSP), and Additional DSP Mr. Y. Madhav Reddy sustained injuries.

Furthermore, the State Police launched an investigation and are probing to arrest those behind the violent acts, which created panic and disturbance in Amalapuram.  Addressing the media on the 25th of May, Wednesday, the police assured to take strict action against the culprits involved in the violence.

In addition, people are stranded in various places as there is no transport either to or from Amalapuram.  Small businessmen suspended their daily business activity and the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) buses suspended their services in Amalapuram.
