The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on the 3rd of June, Thursday launched the YSR Jagananna Colonies project.  Under the project, more than 15.6 lakh houses would be constructed at a cost of Rs. 28,084 crore in the first phase.

The entire project is targeted to be completed by June 2023, whereas the first phase construction is expected to be completed by June 2022.

During the launch event, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy said, “In this state, no individual should experience the plight of not having a house, the state government is fulfilling the poor’s dream of owning a house and ensuring the women of the state are secured and empowered by registering these house pattas under the women’s name. In a way that was never heard or seen of before this housing activity is taking place, today we take a step forward toward that dream.”  He further said, “This Housing activity helps boost the economic activity in the state by creating need for work in 30 different fields, from manufacturing to construction. Additionally, the engaged workers have the opportunity to work on these projects taking place in their hometowns eliminating a major inconvenience of travelling long distances or relocating for work.”

The project is a promise made by the ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) during the 2019 Andhra Pradesh election manifesto. 

The Government targeted to complete ‘Pedalandhariki Illu’ scheme by June 2023. In both phases, as many as 28,30,227 houses will be constructed at a cost of Rs 50,944 crores. 

Meanwhile, under the scheme, the YSRCP Government also distributed house sites to approximately 30.76 lakh beneficiaries for the house construction. It is to be noted, of the 8,905 layouts in the first phase, 11.26 lakh houses are being constructed as the YSR Jagananna colonies, 2,92,984 houses are being constructed for the beneficiaries with their own land and 1,40,465 houses for the beneficiaries with land allotted by the Government.

For the construction of the houses, the State Government appointed 21.70 crore workers, including management officials to labourers.

Also, the large scale construction amid the second wave of the Wuhan virus (Novel Coronavirus) would give employment to many people including masons, rod vendors, carpenters, electricians, bricklayers and cement sellers.

These constructed houses would have facilities like the internet, drinking water, power supply and others. In regard to this, the State Government is spending an amount of Rs.4,128 crores on drinking water, Rs. 4,986 on power supply, Rs. 627 crores on Internet and Rs. 567 crores on other facilities at these constructed colonies. The houses would be of 340 square feet, with one bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, porch and a hall. The houses would also have two fans, two tube lights, four bulbs and one sintex tank.

The construction of the promised ‘Pedalandhariki Ilu’ (housing for the poor,) scheme would be completed by 2023.
