The Andhra Pradesh (A.P.,) Government, on the 4th of January, announced the Sankranti/Pongal holidays in the State.

The Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) Government declared schools and colleges would remain closed from the 10th of January to the 20th of January on account of Sankranti/Pongal.

The citizens of A.P., are already preparing for the four day festival, known as Makara Sankranti in the Telugu states and Pongal in Tamil Nadu.

The Education Department of A.P., released a notification which read, “In the circumstances reported in the reference cited and after careful examination of the matter, Government hereby accord permission to the Commissioner of School Education, A.P. to declare Pongal Holidays 2020 from 10th to 20th January and reopen schools on 21st January 2020.”

After the grand celebrations of Pongal, the schools and colleges would reopen on the 21st of January.

In South India, Sankranti/Pongal is celebrated in a grand way to mark the beginning of Uttarayana and harvesting time and is also known as the ‘harvest festival.’

The four day festival witnesses processions of cows, decorated with ornaments, amongst other rituals.  The 4 days of Sankranti celebrations are known as Bhogi, Sankranti, Kanuma and Mukkanuma respectively. This year, the Sankranti celebrations would start from the 14th of January and continue till the 17th of January.
