On the 23rd of December, the bodies of the four accused in the Disha rape and murder case were finally handed over to the their families.

After the All India Institute of Medical and Science (AIIMS) conducted a second autopsy for collecting evidence, the doctors gave their approval for giving the bodies to the family members of the accused.

The decision to conduct the postmortem came after the Telangana High Court (HC) reviewed a petition filed by Sravan Kumar regarding the release of the bodies of the accused.

The Telangana HC ordered another autopsy be conducted and a report about the same, including a video of the postmortem, be submitted in a couple of days.

A forensic team of AIIMS, Delhi, visited Hyderabad’s Gandhi Hospital, where the autopsy took place.  The AIIMS doctors conducted the autopsy for about four hours in the presence of the family members of the 4 accused, following which, they completed the legal process and gave the bodies.

The Gandhi Hospital authorities sent the bodies to the native places of the accused in an ambulance.  The families got the bodies of their kin after 17 days of their death in an encounter.

The four were killed in an encounter on the 6th of December while they were trying to escape from the crime scene during an interrogation.

The families of the accused are expected to perform the last rites on the evening of the 23rd of December.
