A case of ragging has been reported at Guntur Medical College (GMC) in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh.
On the 19th of March, an MBBS first-year student of GMC alleged senior students of ragging. She said the senior asked her to wear full sleeves shirt to college, as a part of the ragging. The student, who wished to be anonymous, registered a complaint with the National Medical Commission, following which the Anti Ragging Help Desk has demanded an explanation from the GMC Principal Dr. Ch. Padmavati.
The Anti Ragging department also asked the principal to send details of the anti-ragging committee, formed in the medical college to address such problems. Furthermore, after the matter came to light, Ms. Padmavati addressed the media and said, “Anti-Ragging Committee meeting held on Friday, the 18th of March, and discussed the complaint. The anti-ragging cell in the college received (a) complaint on March 16. It was found that the incident took place at a men’s hostel and they conducted counseling to senior students.” She further said, “We have stepped up security at the men’s hostel to check ragging in the hostel. Steps were being taken to avoid meeting seniors and juniors at the mess also. Anti-ragging committee members are frequently visiting the men’s hostel and inquiring about the situation in the hostel.
The GMC also installed closed-circuit cameras at the men’s hostel of the GMC and took all the steps to prevent ragging at premises.
