Due to a landslide incident at Tirumala, Tirupati, the shrine of Lord Venkateswara, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) has been closed.

During the early hours of the 1st of December, Wednesday, huge boulders and mounds of soil along with uprooted trees blocked the road, leaving vehicles stuck on the ghat road. The incident took place at the ghat road of Tirumala. Traffic movement also came to a halt for an indefinite period, forcing TTD authority to shut down the temple. Fortunately, no casualties were reported due to the incident. The roads were damaged at three places due to the landslide.

A senior official of the TTD said, “Owing to incessant rains last month, soil loosened at different points on the second ghat road. There was no immediate threat, but we have taken up restoration works on the second ghat. However, a massive landslide occurred again in the early hours of Wednesday, bringing huge boulders and trees crashing onto the ghat road. Keeping in view the safety of devotees, we closed down the second ghat and restoration works are underway.”

In addition, the TTD Engineering Wing started repair works and the TTD authorities requested the devotees to postpone their temple visit for three days due to repair works.

The TTD Chairman Mr. Y.V. Subba Reddy along with Mr. Veerabrahmam and the Chief Engineer Mr. Nageswara Rao inspected the damaged road and inquired about the incident. Mr. Y.V. Subba Reddy informed that incessant rains resulted in soil loosening at various points of the ghat road.

The TTD temple is likely to reopen for devotees from the 4th of December.
