On the 6th of July, Nara Lokesh, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) National General Secretary wrote to the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister over student’s safety.

Recently, the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) announced it would conduct offline semester exams for degree and engineering students.   In regard to this, Nara Lokesh wrote a letter to Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh (A.P.)

In the letter Nara Lokesh urged Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy to consider the opinions of students and the respective institutions before going ahead with the offline semester examinations.  The letter was written expressing concern over the safety of students, especially when the third wave is expected to come in August-October.

The TDP General Secretary said over 17 lakh students are registered to take these exams.  He said conducting exams would trigger severe complications among the youth if the third wave comes in August-October.

Citing the recently cancelled examination of the Secondary School Certificate (SCC) and Intermediate exams, Nara Lokesh said the infection rate reduced due to the recently cancelled examination.  If the State Government would conduct the semester examination during the ongoing second wave, the situation might get worse.

Stressing the need for caution, Lokesh said, “A.P., has more than 3,500 institutions of higher learning, including 53 universities and thousands of colleges and stand alone institutions, catering to more than 17 lakh students in regular and distance-learning modes.  The average positivity rate in A.P., has been brought below 5 % in June, through cancelling school exams and Covid-appropriate behaviour by the people. Should we risk these hard-fought gains by having exams for lakhs of college-going students?”

Nara Lokesh said, most of our students have not been vaccinated yet and the risk of a third wave infecting the younger population through the more deadly Delta variants is also quite high.  Therefore, the YSRCP Government should reconsider conducting exams.
