On the 24th of April, Justice N.V. Ramana, the Judge of the Supreme Court (SC) took oath of office as the new Chief Justice of India (CJI.)

The appointment of Mr. N.V. Ramana was made by the President of India Ram Nath Kovind on the 6th of April. He is the 48th CJI of India and would have a tenure till the 26th of August 2022.

The appointment of Justice N.V. Ramana was based on a recommendation letter written by CJI S.A. Bobde. The recommendation from the former CJI Bobde came after the Central Government asked him to recommend his successor. The selection of the CJI is based on seniority. With this, N.V. Ramana became the second Chief Justice of India from Andhra Pradesh. In 1966, Justice K. Subba Rao, became the 9th CJI and the first from Andhra Pradesh.

Highlighting the career achievements of Justice N.V. Ramana, he was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on the 27th of June, 2000. He functioned as acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court from the 10th of March 2013 to the 20th of May 20, 2013. Later in 2013, He was elevated as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court and he started as a judge in the Supreme Court from 2014. After CJI S.A. Bobde, Justice N.V. Ramana is the senior most Judge on the Apex Court.

The President of India Ramnath Kovind administered the oath to Justice N.V. Ramana at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

The oath taking ceremony was organised following all the precautions and protocols of the COVID-19. The oath taking ceremony came a day after the former CJI S.A. Bobde’s term ended (the 23rd of April.)

Besides President Ram Nath Kovind, the Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Supreme Court (SC) judges and Union Cabinet ministers and others were present at the oath taking ceremony.
