Twitter is flooded with messages commemorating 20 years of Kargil War, which took place in 1999 in Kargil, Jammu and Kashmir.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and shared some rare images of his visit to Kargil in 1999 with a message, “During the Kargil War in 1999, I had the opportunity to go to Kargil and show solidarity with our brave soldiers. This was the time when I was working for my Party in J&K as well as Himachal Pradesh. The visit to Kargil and interactions with soldiers are unforgettable.”

On the 26th of July 2019, India celebrates the 20th anniversary of the 1999 Kargil War and India’s victory against Pakistan.  The Kargil War is called ‘Operation Vijay’ (Operation Success) by India.

Indian leaders, political parties and celebrities took to Twitter and paid tribute to the soldiers who fought bravely against Pakistan during the War.

Sushmita Dev, the Spokesperson of the Indian National Congress (INC,) saluted the Indian Army soldiers for sacrificing their lives for a better nation today.

On the other hand, Rajnath Singh, the Defence Minister of India, paid tribute to the soldiers at the Kargil War Memorial in New Delhi.

Bipin Rawat, the Army Chief General, Birendra Singh Dhanoa, the Air Chief Marshal and Karambir Singh, the Navy Chief Admiral, also paid tribute to the soldiers at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Jammu and Kashmir.

On the 20th of July, the Government of India (GoI) organised a ‘Kargil Victory Run’ to pay tribute to the soldiers.  Approximately 6,000 people, including ministers, leaders and other officials across Delhi, participated in the event.

Rajnath Singh also lit the ‘Victory Flame’ which will be received by Bipin Rawat at the Kargil War Memorial.
