Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh (AP,) on the 11th of November, attended an event organised to celebrate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in Vijayawada.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was the first Education Minister of India and on his birth anniversary, India celebrates National Education Day.  Mr. Azad was the Education Minister from 1947 to 1958. States across India celebrate the day and distribute the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Awards to students with merit marks in secondary and higher secondary exams.

On the occasion, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy gave the awards to meritorious students and recalled the contribution of Abul Kalam Azad to the field of education.

Y.S. Jagan also directed the Education Department officials of Andhra Pradesh to teach English to pupils studying between 1st standard and 6th standard.

Jagan Mohan Reddy said from the academic year starting 2020, the schools in AP should be converted to English medium and Telugu and Urdu would be subjects.

English will be made mandatory for pupils studying between 1st standard and 6th standard.  The implementation of the new rule would start from the 14th of November, Children’s Day.
