Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the President of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP,) gave a remark about the performance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the last five years.

Mr. Reddy addressed the media and said, “Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) might be scoring well all over the Country. Probably, he has exhibited a stronger will than any other prime minister. Maybe he has done far better. But as far as Andhra Pradesh is concerned, he doesn’t score well.”

In Andhra Pradesh, Modi has an image of a traitor, someone who betrayed the State after promising the Special Category Status (SCS) to Andhra Pradesh (AP.)

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Narendra Modi promised the SCS to Andhra Pradesh, but after winning the elections, he refused to fulfill the promise.

The State is demanding the SCS since the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh into the State of Telangana and the State of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.

N. Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister of AP and the President of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP,) conducted several protests against the Central Government and demanded the SCS.

Recently, on the 12th of March, Mr. Naidu called for a half day dharna (strike) at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and asked the Government of India (GoI) to grant the SCS to Andhra Pradesh.

The SCS is one of the major issues in Andhra Pradesh, which every political party in the State is using as their one of their trump cards to win the upcoming AP Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

Andhra Pradesh will contest a total of 175 seats and 25 seats in the upcoming Assembly and Lok Sabha elections respectively. The Andhra Pradesh Lok Sabha and Assembly elections are scheduled on the 11th of April.

The major parties contesting in Andhra Pradesh are the YSRCP, the TDP and the JanaSena Party.

The results of the Andhra Pradesh Assembly and Lok Sabha elections will be announced on the 23rd of May 2019.

Stay tuned for further updates about the AP Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
