The Indian National Congress (INC) sought an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for his comments about Rahul Gandhi, the President of the INC.

The Narendra Modi led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made remarks about Rahul Gandhi, after Mr. Gandhi announced he will contest from the Wayanad constituency in Kerala.

PM Modi, during a public rally in Maharashtra, on the 1st of April, made a remark and said, Rahul Gandhi is scared of Hindus and ran to Wayanad, instead of contesting in North India.

The BJP leaders also said, Rahul Gandhi is scared of losing, hence he is contesting from Wayanad, where the strong opposition party is Left Democratic Front (LDF) and not the BJP.

The criticism from the BJP leaders came after the INC, on the 31st of March, announced, Rahul Gandhi will be contesting from Wayanad, apart from the Amethi constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

The INC, angry over the comments of the BJP and PM Modi, sought an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Randeep Singh Surjewala, the Spokesperson of the INC, addressed the media and said, “He must apologise to the Nation. He has insulted the freedom movement, he has insulted entire southern India, he has insulted the composite culture of India, he has insulted the India that is unified by its multiple cultures as also languages, religions, castes and creeds. The Election Commission must take note of this and take action against Narendra Modi (sic.)”

In addition, K.C. Venugopal, the General Secretary of the INC, said, PM Modi’s comments against Rahul Gandhi are not only disgrace to Gandhi, but also to the people living in Wayanad.

The Wayanad constituency in Kerala is said to consist of mixed cultures and religions. In Wayanad, there are 48 % Hindus, 28 % Muslims, 20 % Christians and the remaining are Scheduled Tribes (STs,) the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and other minorities.

The INC also complained about the comments of PM Modi to the Election Commission of India (ECI) and asked the authorities to take strict action against PM Modi and his Party, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

The Lok Sabha elections are scheduled to begin from the 11th of April and will continue till the 19th of May 2019.

The major parties contesting the Lok Sabha elections are the INC and the BJP.

The results of the Lok Sabha elections will be announced on the 23rd of May 2019.
