The daughter of Suprabhat Batyabal, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, was kidnapped, on the 14th of February, from her residence in Birbhum district, West Bengal.
Suprabhat Batyabal is a local BJP leader, who was initially a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader. Five months ago, he quit the TMC and joined the BJP, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
According to sources, a gang entered his house when he was not at home and allegedly kidnapped his daughter at gunpoint.
Sujit Batyal, the brother of the victim, on the 15th of February, said, “Five miscreants barged into the house around 8 pm, on finding out that Suprabhat was not home.” He further added, “First, they confined us in a room and locked it from outside. Then, at gunpoint, they dragged my niece out and forced her into a car, which was parked near our home, and drove off.”
The villagers were infuriated by this and blocked the Suri Katwa road and the other main roads and called for a protest.
The family filed a complaint at the Labhpur Police Station. Shyam Singh, the Superintendent of the Labhpur Police, arrested a suspect and is interrogating him. However, the police could not reach the girl and are searching for her.
Speaking about the political angle of the case, Mr. Shyam said, there is no evidence to suggest a political motive and the main reason behind the kidnapping is yet to be ascertained. He further added, until the investigation is complete, the police cannot say anything.
Mr. Singh said, “We are investigating into the incident from all seconds. Prima facie, we haven’t found any political motive behind the kidnapping, but no possibility can be ruled out.”
The investigation regarding the case is underway.
