AAP Demands Sine Die Adjournment Of Parliament Session After Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Tests COVID-19 Positive

Recently, another political leader and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, tested positive for the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19.

Citing the same reason, opposition demanded sine die (adjournment of any business or official proceedings with no decided date for resumption) of the ongoing Budget Parliament session. With a rise in the Novel Coronavirus cases, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) demanded the sine die adjournment of the Parliament Budget Session.

Narain Dass Gupta, the MP of the AAP, wrote to the Chairman of the Lok Sabha Venkaiah Naidu. In the letter Mr. Narain Dass Gupta said, “This is to bring to your kind notice that there is an alarming rise in Corona cases nearing a peak situation again nationwide. It is requested to adjourn the parliament session as a precautionary measure for safety of respected members and the staff.”

However, a decision regarding the same is yet to be taken.

On the 21st of March, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) released a press note and informed about the situation of Mr. Om Birla.

The release read, ” Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla tested positive for COVID-19 on the 19th of March. He was admitted to (the) AIIMS COVID Centre for observation on the 20th of March. He is stable.”

Mr. Om Birla tested positive during the ongoing Parliament Budget session, which would now be a matter of concern. All the Members of Parliament (MPs) might need to undergo a COVID-19 test. In addition, this would be the first instance in the Lok Sabha’s history when there would be no Deputy Speaker to preside over the House in the absence of the Speaker.

Meanwhile, the Central Government is scheduled to propose important bills today.

Bills to be introduced: The National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development Bill, 2021, The Finance Bill, 2021, The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2021.

The Budget Parliament session is scheduled to conclude on the 8th of April.

Stay tuned for further updates.
