The former Union Minister and the founder of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) Chaudhary Ajit Singh passed away on the 6th of May. 

According to sources, he was tested positive for the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19 and died while undergoing treatment for the same.

Ajit Singh, 82 years old tested COVID-19 positive on the 20th of April and was admitted to a private hospital in Delhi. His demise was confirmed by his son Jayant Chaudhary on the morning of the 6th of May.

Jayant Chaudhary, the Vice President of the RLD, took to Twitter and said, “Chaudhary Ajit Singh ji was diagnosed as COVID-19 positive on April 20. He battled his condition till the very end and breathed his last today morning on May 6.”

Chaudhary Ajit Singh began his political career as a Rajya Sabha MP in 1986, after his father fell ill. At several points throughout the later years, Ajit Singh played a key role in government formations by bringing in alliances between political parties.

Hearing the demise of Ajit Singh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other political leaders conveyed their condolences.

PM Modi took to Twitter and said, “पूर्व केंद्रीय मंत्री चौधरी अजित सिंह जी के निधन से अत्यंत दुख हुआ है। वे हमेशा किसानों के हित में समर्पित रहे। उन्होंने केंद्र में कई विभागों की जिम्मेदारियों का कुशलतापूर्वक निर्वहन किया। शोक की इस घड़ी में मेरी संवेदनाएं उनके परिजनों और प्रशंसकों के साथ हैं। ओम शांति!”

(He was devoted to the interests of the farmers. He efficiently discharged the responsibilities of several departments at the Centre.)

Chaudhary Ajit Singh was the Union minister of Industry in former Prime Minister V.P. Singh’s Cabinet from December 1989 to November 1990. He later served as the Union minister of food in the P.V. Narasimha Rao cabinet. Later, in 2001 he became the Minister of Agriculture and held the position till 2003 under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government.

Later in 2011, RLD joined the then ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA.) During 2011 to 2014, Ajit Singh was the Civil Aviation Minister of India.

In 2014, the Right Wing, National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came in power.

Besides holding the Union ministries portfolio, Ajit Singh also served as a member of the central committees on finance and government assurances and central committee on chemicals and fertilisers.

Chaudhary Ajit Singh is survived by his son, Jayant Chaudhary, and two daughters.

The final rites of Chaudhary Ajit Singh is scheduled to be held on the 6th of May.
