India crossed the 1 billion (100 crore) mark of administering the Wuhan virus (COVID-19) vaccine doses today, the 21st of October.

So far, the Indian Health Department administered over 100 crore vaccination doses and touched the 100 crore landmark on Thursday. With this historic achievement, India would be the only nation, which has given 100 crore anti Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) doses.

Mr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Health Minister of India, asked all the eligible people to get inoculated without delay and contribute to the “historic” journey.

Later, the Union Health Minister would also launch a song by singer Kailash Kher and an audio-visual film at the Red Fort for the historic event. The day is also expected to witness the raising of the largest national flag, weighing around 1,400 kg, at the Red Fort, New Delhi. In addition, the Central Government also planned to make announcements over loudspeakers on trains, planes, and ships regarding the 100 crore vaccine doses given to people.

In the past one month, India is administering 1 crore COVID-19 doses, taking the total to 100 crores till date.

According to the Union Health Ministry data, of the total 100 crore (1,00,00, 27,342) vaccination doses given to the people, 70 % are those who received their first doses, the remaining 30 % of the people are fully vaccinated with two doses. However, 25 % population ( 18+ ) are still unvaccinated and need to get their first dose soon. The Central Government urged people to get their COVID-19 doses, as they aim to vaccinate eligible adult by the end of December.

On this occasion, Mr. Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh said, “I congratulate all health workers and frontline workers on achieving 1 billion Covid-19 vaccinations. During this festive season, we need to remain alert and avoid crowded areas to ensure that the virus does not spread.”

Dr. V.K. Paul, a member of the NITI Aayog said, “Congratulations to the people & healthcare workers of India. It’s remarkable to reach 1 billion dose mark for any nation, an achievement in just over 9 months since the vaccination program started in India.”

In India, the nationwide vaccination drive against the COVID-19 started on the 16th of January 2021. In just 10 months, India administered two doses of vaccine to 28.70 crore people, which means, 20.80 % of the total population is fully vaccinated.

The COVID-19 vaccination drive started in a phased manner, vaccinating senior citizens in the first phase, people above 45 years old in the second phase and people between 18 to 44 years old in the third phase.
